The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador released its 2026 forest fire season statistics, recording 133 wildfires and an approximate burn area of 96,000 hectares across the province, led by 57 fires in Labrador, 56 in Eastern Newfoundland, and 21 in Western Newfoundland. There were 81 confirmed human-caused wildfires alongside 50 lightning-caused fires, marking the first time in recent years that lightning was the leading cause. To support these operations, Budget 2026 provided over $7 million for firefighting and emergency resources, alongside ongoing initiatives such as the return of the province's fifth water bomber, amendments to the Forestry Act to strengthen penalties, and targeted firefighter recruitment.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, through the Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands, has opened the second round of applications for the Newfoundland and Labrador Community Wildfire Prevention and Mitigation Program, running until November 6, 2026. This initiative is supported by a $12.8-million joint investment from the federal and provincial governments under Natural Resources Canada's Resilient Communities through FireSmart Program. An initial investment of approximately $2.26 million has already assisted 58 communities in developing community wildfire resiliency plans and local mitigation projects. Applications are assessed by the Newfoundland and Labrador FireSmart Committee alongside a technical sub-committee to help municipalities reduce wildfire risks and protect critical infrastructure.
