The Prince Edward Island provincial government has been granted intervener status in a court appeal filed by Maritime Electric against the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC). The utility is challenging IRAC's June decision that limited Maritime Electric to recovering approximately 90 per cent of its $41.2 million in restoration costs for post-tropical storm Fiona in 2022, citing that costs could have been avoided with better preparedness. Additionally, Maritime Electric is asking the P.E.I. Court of Appeal to overturn IRAC's ruling denying the utility a profit return on $15.3 million in operating costs and $6.6 million in interest costs, a dispute that could result in more than $6 million in additional recovery costs passed on to customers.
