Premier Tony Wakeham and Finance/Seniors Minister Craig Pardy announced the Seniors Affordability Payment, a $64 million one-time relief measure providing up to $500 to over 130,000 seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador. Eligible seniors with an individual adjusted net income up to $75,000 receive the full $500, while those earning between $75,000 and $100,000 receive scaled partial payments down to a minimum of $100. Funded via personal income tax information from the Canada Revenue Agency, payments require no application and are scheduled to be issued by cheque by the Department of Finance before the end of 2026. This initiative contributes to a broader $143 million package of affordability measures announced by the Provincial Government since October 22, 2026, which also includes the Churchill Falls Electricity Rebate, the doubling of the Home Heating Supplement, and a temporary provincial gas tax removal.
