The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, through the NL Workforce Innovation Centre, is launching stakeholder consultations to overhaul the provincial apprenticeship system based on recommendations from Prism Economics and Analysis. The consultation process will gather input from apprentices, employers, unions, Indigenous governments, and training providers via online surveys, focus groups, and interviews to improve access, outcomes, and industry responsiveness. Key areas of focus include strengthening industry participation, establishing advisory councils, enhancing workforce planning data, and creating evaluation performance indicators. The consultation report is scheduled to be completed later in 2026.

The Governments of Canada and British Columbia have launched a $2.7 million funding initiative under Phase 2 of the Rural and Remote Employment Initiatives Fund to support northern B.C. businesses and First Nations development corporations responding to global tariffs. Administered by the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT), the funding is split into two programs opening for applications on September 2, 2026: the Business Diversification and Sustainability (BDS) program, which provides grants of up to $200,000 covering up to 75% of project costs for small and medium-sized businesses totaling $1.8 million, and the First Nations Business Development Capacity Building program, which provides up to $75,000 per applicant covering up to 90% of eligible costs totaling $900,000. Federal, provincial, and territorial ministers meeting in Iqaluit, Nunavut, agreed to accelerate efforts to reach an agreement in principle by fall 2026 on model mutual recognition legislation to create a common Canadian market and support labour mobility. Ministers ratified amendments to the Canadian Free Trade Agreement establishing a 30-day service standard for labour mobility applications and committed to expanding the Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement to services by December 2026. Additionally, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency introduced concierge services and targeted exemptions under the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations to allow provincial red meat slaughter facilities to trade low volumes interprovincially. Nine premiers also signed an operating agreement in July 2026 regarding direct-to-consumer sales of alcoholic beverages.

The Government of Saskatchewan is expanding its Rural and Remote Recruitment Incentive (RRRI) program by adding 12 new communities—Canwood, Cudworth, Eston, Hafford, Langenburg, Leask, Loon Lake, Norquay, Sandy Bay, Stoughton, Strasbourg, and Whitewood—effective September 1, 2026. The expansion brings the total number of participating communities to 94, offering incentive packages of up to $50,000 for a three-year return-in-service commitment in nine high-priority health care occupations. Funded by an $8.7 million allocation in the 2026-27 Provincial Budget, the RRRI program is part of the broader Health Human Resources Action Plan, which has helped reduce vacancies by 44 per cent across eligible communities and fill over 650 hard-to-recruit positions since 2022.

The Ontario government is investing over $4.8 million through the sixth round of the Skills Development Fund Training Stream across three projects in Simcoe and surrounding areas to train 400 workers and jobseekers for careers in skilled trades, agriculture, and long-term care. Blue Door Support Service is receiving $3,637,864 to help 200 vulnerable, unemployed, and unhoused jobseekers in York, Durham, and Peel regions through its Construct program. Botree Inc. is receiving $813,700 to train 125 women and underrepresented groups for frontline healthcare roles in long-term care facilities. The Karma Project Community Food Co-Operative Inc. is receiving $417,000 to provide 75 at-risk youth with technical training and mentorship for agricultural careers.
