In response to escalating United States tariffs implemented by President Donald Trump's administration that increased export costs by 65 percent, Whitehorse-based renewable power firm Solvest Inc. is pivoting its operations from Alaska to the Yukon market. To support this transition and help local businesses respond to cross-border trade disputes, the federal government through the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency is awarding $1.9 million across four Yukon companies, including $260,000 directed to Solvest Inc. Solvest Inc. will use the funding to develop a new 500-kilowatt mobile "power pod" solar and battery storage system designed specifically for the Yukon placer mining industry, with the first unit slated to launch in spring 2027.
