The Government of Ontario and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) have officially started construction on the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment project, Canada's largest clean energy infrastructure initiative. The $41.6 billion project extends the operational life of Pickering's four CANDU reactors (Units 5 through 8) by up to 38 years, replacing 1,520 fuel channels and 48 boilers to supply 2,200 megawatts of power. Major contract awards include a $1.7 billion execution phase agreement with Aecon Group Inc. and Candu Energy (an AtkinsRéalis company) for Retube, Feeder, and Boiler Replacement, and a $1.3 billion contract with Aecon Group Inc. and Siemens Energy Canada for Turbine Generator Replacement. The refurbishment will create 30,500 annual construction jobs, generate $17 billion in economic activity across Durham Region and Ontario, and maintain regional medical isotope production for Cobalt-60, with final reactor work pending Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approval in January 2027.

The Ontario government is investing nearly $1.9 million through the Ontario Labour Market Partnerships program to fund a two-year strategic study led by the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI). Titled 'Strengthening Ontario's Nuclear Supply Chain: A Strategic Study to Enable Clean Energy Growth', the project will map the domestic nuclear supply chain, identify workforce and manufacturing gaps, and develop recommendations to support major nuclear build-outs across the province. These projects include the Darlington and Bruce nuclear station refurbishments, the construction of the G7's first grid-scale Small Modular Reactor at Darlington, and new generation opportunities at the Wesleyville and Bruce C sites. The broader nuclear expansion is projected to support up to 150,000 workers, generate over $800 billion in additional GDP, and meet escalating domestic and international clean energy demands.
