The federal government and the Atlantic provincial governments are replenishing the Atlantic Fisheries Fund with more than $300 million over the next five years, funded 60 per cent federally and 40 per cent provincially, in response to ongoing trade disputes and tariffs with the U.S. Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson announced that market diversification has been added as a new funding pillar alongside innovation, infrastructure, and science partnerships to assist harvesters and processors such as Cooke Inc., the P.E.I. Retaliatory counter-tariffs implemented by Canada on American-made products took effect, raising import prices and impacting businesses and consumers on Prince Edward Island. Sam Sanderson, executive director of the Construction Association of Prince Edward Island, noted that approximately 65 per cent of construction materials used in the province originate from the U.S. and face these tariffs, potentially increasing material costs by 20 to 50 per cent. Prime Minister Mark Carney released a video stating that Canada will respond to the ongoing trade war by reducing reliance on the United States and pursuing new international trade agreements. Meanwhile, Prince Edward Island businesses such as MacArthur's Appliances, led by owner-operator Chris Welton, are managing price hikes and noting a shift in consumer sentiment away from American-made goods. The provincial government has also rolled out $12.5 million in support for businesses affected by U.S. tariffs.

The United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has introduced new rules restricting Prince Edward Island potato exports, effective October 5, following the detection of potato wart fungus in a soil sample from a P.E.I. farm in May. The updated Import Federal Order requires U.S. facilities that import, process, package, or repackage bulk shipments of P.E.I. potatoes to operate under facility-specific compliance agreements. Additionally, the rules prohibit using cull potatoes and potato waste as animal feed, mandate waste disposal at approved sites, strengthen export certification standards, improve labelling requirements, and ban the use of P.E.I. imports as seed potatoes.

Federal and provincial ministers met in Iqaluit and Prince Edward Island to advance interprovincial trade agreements, building on a recent nine-province accord allowing direct-to-consumer alcohol sales across provincial lines. International Monetary Fund estimates indicate that removing internal trade barriers could increase Canada's real grossD product by up to seven per cent, or approximately $210 billion, over the long term. Priorities for ongoing discussions include securing a freer flow of services by the end of the year, harmonizing approval processes for prefabricated homes and building materials, and facilitating food trade. Meanwhile, University of Ottawa professor Wolfgang Alschner is utilizing artificial intelligence to catalogue approximately 17,000 regulatory texts across Canada to systematically identify and eliminate unnecessary trade divergences.

Finance Canada removed fish and seafood products, including lobster and crab, from its retaliatory tariff list just a day after initially imposing counter-measures on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods. The initial list would have subjected U.S. seafood imports to a 25 per cent tariff, which industry groups like the Lobster Processors Association and the New Brunswick Crab Processors Association warned would devastate integrated cross-border processing operations. To maintain a dollar-for-dollar and rate-for-rate response, the Ministry of Finance added copper wire, charcoal, plaster sheets, and tiles to the tariff list at a 50 per cent rate, taking effect on September 8.
