Prime Minister Mark Carney's $82-billion federal defence funding package has triggered a major structural reorganization of the Canadian Army, establishing the 1st Canadian Division headquarters at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton with coast-to-coast operational and expeditionary command responsibilities. The reorganization marks Canada's first division-level war-fighting alignment since the Second World War, driven by security shifts stemming from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. CFB Edmonton's workforce is set to expand by 1,000 personnel over the next five years, alongside the introduction of new operational capabilities including long-range precision strike systems, drones, air defence, electronic warfare equipment, and Canadian-made Colt rifles.
