Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen's office stated the regulations will address safety, speed limits, operating locations, age limits, and protective equipment, while allowing municipalities such as Edmonton and Calgary to enforce and choose where these devices are permitted. Currently, e-bikes operating under 500 watts and a maximum speed of 32 kilometres per hour are provincially regulated, whereas personal e-scooters have lacked a formal legal framework outside of municipal rental pilot projects.
