United States introduces new rules surrounding P.E.I. potato exports

The United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has introduced new rules restricting Prince Edward Island potato exports, effective October 5, following the detection of potato wart fungus in a soil sample from a P.E.I. farm in May. The updated Import Federal Order requires U.S. facilities that import, process, package, or repackage bulk shipments of P.E.I. potatoes to operate under facility-specific compliance agreements. Additionally, the rules prohibit using cull potatoes and potato waste as animal feed, mandate waste disposal at approved sites, strengthen export certification standards, improve labelling requirements, and ban the use of P.E.I. imports as seed potatoes.
